Vasthi Treatment center in Trivandrum

What is Vasthi?

Vasthi, often regarded as the most powerful of the Panchakarma therapies, is a therapeutic enema treatment in Ayurveda used to cleanse and rejuvenate the colon. It is especially effective in balancing Vata dosha, the governing force of movement in the body. There are two primary types of Vasthi:

  • Sneha Vasthi – enema using medicated oils or ghee
  • Kashaya Vasthi – enema using herbal decoctions

This treatment is not only a detox method but also a curative procedure for a wide range of chronic and degenerative conditions. Vasthi works by flushing out toxins, nourishing the body, and improving the function of the digestive and nervous systems.

What are the indications?

Vasthi is highly recommended for:

  • Constipation and irregular bowel movement
  • Arthritis (Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis)
  • Sciatica and lower back pain
  • Neurological disorders like paralysis and multiple sclerosis
  • Muscle wasting and emaciation
  • Infertility and gynecological disorders
  • Dry skin, insomnia, and anxiety
  • Spinal disorders and degenerative joint conditions
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and colitis

What is the Treatment Procedure?

Sneha Vasthi (Oil Enema):

  • Medicated oils or ghee are selected based on the patient’s condition and dosha imbalance.
  • The oil is warmed and administered into the rectum using a specialized enema apparatus.
  • The patient retains the oil for a specific period (usually 30 minutes to a few hours).
  • The treatment lubricates the colon and is usually done after food.

Kashaya Vasthi (Decoction Enema):

  • A herbal decoction mixed with a small quantity of oil, honey, and salt is prepared.
  • The mixture is administered via enema and retained for a shorter time.
  • It acts as a powerful detoxifier and is usually performed on an empty stomach.
  • Often, Sneha Vasthi and Kashaya Vasthi are given in a prescribed sequence over 8, 15, or 30 days as part of a full Vasthi therapy cycle.
